Delicate Package…Handle with Care
Babies are very special gifts from God. They must be handled as such.
Caring for and grooming the delicate locks of babies is a task that must be handled with care, patience and love. Take the time to bond with your little one, and teach them that they can trust your hands. Talk to them, sing to them, hug them and kiss them. Help them to see the grooming process as a loving process. They will learn to trust you and this will make the grooming process pleasant for both parent and baby.
It doesn’t matter the amount of hair baby has or does not have. Their scalp is extremely fragile and sensitive. So don’t pull or tug at their hair. Don’t force the hair to do what you think it should do. Comb the hair in the direction that it grows. Do not place very small or very large barrettes, bows, beads, rubber bands etc. in their hair. Babies tend to pull at their hair and they may remove one of the adornments and place it in their mouth. This can be very dangerous.
Don’t be alarmed if baby looses their hair. The back and sides of the head are common areas prone to hair loss. This is due to their sleeping position, bed linens, clothing, and so many other things. Don’t become frustrated if your little one loses their hair, because the hair will eventually grow all over. Also, many babies are born with a texture of hair that may change over time. This is due to hereditary.
Cradle Cap is a form of dermatitis that appears on the scalps of infants that may appear as a white crusty or yellow patch. Cradle cap is not dangerous. I understand how frustrating it may be to see your little one with such a condition. Babies that suffer with cradle cap may be prone to eczema. Do not scratch the babies scalp. This may cause irritation and a trip to the pediatrician’s office. If the condition spreads through the scalp, to the neck or face please contact your pediatrician.
Note: As a parent of children that have experienced a severe case of cradle cap I found natural substances to work great at clearing up the cradle cap. I tried all kinds of commercial products and many, well none of them worked for my girls.
Shampoo the baby’s hair with a mild shampoo or soap. Infants do not require daily shampoos. Limit your shampooing to no more than once a week. Stay away from products that contain harsh chemicals such as sulfates, fragrances, etc. These chemicals may be harmful to baby.
Natural Substance:
Dissolved Pure African Black Soap
Commercial Products: (I recommend diluting all commercial products with distilled water):
Aubrey Organics Natural Baby and Kid Shampoo
Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash & Body Wash
Nourish the baby’s hair and scalp with natural substances.
Natural Substance:
Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Jojoba, and/ or coconut oil
Brush the baby’s hair with a very soft bristled brush made exclusively for babies.
Note: Many babies are born with a head full of hair and some parent's find that a brush alone won't do. I'm one of those parents. I had to comb all of my girls hair by the time they were 8 or so months.Accessories should not be small enough to place in a baby’s mouth. Do not place barrettes or bows on the baby’s soft spot. Do not place large ballies on the sides and back of the baby’s head. These may cause damage to the baby’s head if the baby falls. Try using soft ribbons and bows and/ or soft head bands.
Finally - Do not pull the hair tight!!!
